300 Switches Migrated to Cisco Networking Cloud in 3 Weeks

The Situation

With Cisco’s Last Day of Support dates approaching for several Catalyst switch models, this global hospitality company faced a clear mandate: migrate 300 Catalyst switches to Cisco Networking Cloud management before their hardware reached end-of-life.

The company operates network infrastructure across more than 40 hotel properties in the United States and Canada. Each property runs a relatively standardized network architecture, but years of individual site-level changes had introduced meaningful config drift across locations. VLANs, ACLs, QoS policies, and port configurations varied from property to property.

The Challenge

Their initial project estimate was five months. The math was straightforward but painful: each switch required its Catalyst CLI configuration to be manually translated into Cisco Networking Cloud policies. With 300 switches and meaningful variation across sites, the network team estimated 30 to 45 minutes per device for translation alone, not including validation and testing.

The real risk was not the timeline but the translation accuracy. One mismatched ACL could expose a property’s payment processing network. One lost QoS policy could degrade voice traffic for the front desk. The team had no automated way to validate that a translated config would behave identically to the original.

Manual migration also meant manual risk. Every late-night maintenance window was a potential outage if the translated config did not match production behavior.

The Trigger

Two factors converged. LDOS dates created a hard deadline that could not slip. And a failed pilot migration at one property, where a misconfigured VLAN took down guest Wi-Fi for six hours, convinced leadership that manual translation was not sustainable at scale.

The Solution

Config Bridge automated the translation layer that had been the primary bottleneck. The tool ingests Catalyst CLI configurations and maps them to equivalent Cisco Networking Cloud policies, covering VLANs, ACLs, QoS, port configurations, and templates.

The workflow followed a three-step process. First, Config Bridge translated all 300 switch configurations automatically. Second, the team validated the translated policies against the originals using Config Bridge’s comparison reports, catching and correcting three edge cases before any device was migrated. Third, switches were moved to Cisco Networking Cloud management with validated, pre-tested configurations.

The translate-validate-migrate sequence eliminated the risk of discovering misconfigurations in production. Every policy was verified before a single device changed management planes.

The Results

The migration completed in three weeks. Zero misconfigurations reached production. Zero late-night rollbacks were required. The network team estimated they saved approximately 800 engineer-hours compared to their manual approach.

Beyond the time savings, the risk profile of the migration changed fundamentally. Instead of discovering translation errors in production, the team caught and resolved all issues during the validation phase, before any guest-facing infrastructure was affected.

“We went from dreading this migration to finishing it ahead of schedule. The validation step was the difference — we knew every config was right before we moved a single switch.”

The Takeaway

The bottleneck in Catalyst-to-cloud migrations is not the technology. It is the config translation layer. Teams that automate translation and validate before migration eliminate the two biggest sources of project risk: timeline overruns and production misconfigurations.

With LDOS dates set and Cisco Networking Cloud adoption accelerating, the organizations that plan their config translation strategy now will avoid the scramble later. Config Bridge is available on the Cisco Networking App Marketplace and Cisco GPL.
